Continuing on the theme that everything preppy is in style again thanks mostly to Miu Miu and Prada (and the general mood I would add). I wanted a polo top/sweater for Spring, something lightweight because wool or cashmere gets too hot, but also something without a logo and had an aha! moment, because I remembered a classic brand who makes the best, John Smedley.
Quick fashion history moment: John Smedley originated in 1784 as a mill for making cotton, in the 1930s the three-button polo became a cornerstone for their business and the rest they say…but seriously, most James Bond’s have worn them—style arbiters IMO.
The polos are made from Sea Island Cotton, which is so soft and light. I know because I used to buy my husband long-sleeved polos from them. The buttons are beautiful too.
The SS polo comes in 14 colors including two! navys. I also love the paler Mirage blue, Chocolat and Almond. At $270, it’s a worth it piece. You could have a whole Smedley top wardrobe, there are so many other styles and it’s all very tempting. You could also do a little hers/his purchasing.
Next Tuesday is my first Spring trunk show with Maria McManus in Greenwich CT. If you’re in the area, please stop by! Bring friends. I am launching new designs this week (rings, rings, rings) so stay tuned. Please RSVP to eleanor@bancoconnect.com to receive the address.
Those cute casual $300 Miu Miu accessories, I asked my daughter, it’s Paracord. If you want a rainy day DIY moment, go to Paracord Planet, choose your sizes and colors (you could go crazy) and get crafting. Apparently you should be able to finish off or fuse the ends together with a match/lighter (should you want to). You will have to supply your own beads/trim, but I’m into it.
Finally, over the weekend I read (not really) an article summarizing a group of books on people living longer in FT. Mostly, I just looked at the colorful article images and started daydreaming about how much I want to have that kind of vibrancy and interest in getting dressed and getting out as long as I’m able. I have readers who are in their 70s and 80s and still enjoy getting dressed (like my mom) and looking modern. It makes me so happy. I hope my style gets snappier as I get older. The images below are from @sciuraglam, which makes me want to sit up straighter and put some lipstick on, like my mom used to tell me. (According to Wikipedia: “A Sciura is an elderly lady from the city center of Milan, who is essentially rich, elegantly dressed and often easily recognizable by her careless attitude.”) I love the unapologetic glamour and hope some rubs off on me. A Milanese family trust wouldn’t hurt either.

A great book, documentary on long living is The Blue Zones. Now on to Scurias. This is the second time recently I’ve heard this term used. While it’s a little too glamed up for me and the thoughts of spending hours on my hair to get a “big do” isn’t a thought I’ll entertain. I do appreciate looking nice while out and about. Recently, my husband and I were out for a casual dinner, and the dress was casual to the next level. When my parents were alive they would meet us at the restaurant frequently. While eating I remembered how my parents took so much care look “spiffy”” when out and about. As casual as I am at home, I do think it’s nice to make going out, even if it’s just Target, an occasion. My mom would always say “ A little blush and lipstick can make a difference” she was right.
Dreaming of a trust also!!
