Summer Starts Here
The essentials I'm in love with
I am the odd person who loves a hot humid day, and what I love even more about sultry Summer days is that now, I have found a formula for getting dressed that allows me to still feel like my tailored, minimal-ish self.
Each season, I start by creating a color palette that evolves every couple of years and a few key pieces that anchor the mood. A few years ago my palette included a lot of navy. Last year (which I posted in Spring, but the items featured were more summery), I was into adding shades of brown and russet. This summer I want to mix my russet and browns with white and pale blue. Not the electric blue everyone is into right now, but something a bit more aqua.
This season it is all about a white suit for me, one cut from linen that you can separate the pieces and wear the pants often no matter where, and the blazer gets thrown on over a tank during the day, with a button-down for air-conditioned office days and over slip dresses on chilly evenings. I think my Chava Studios white linen blazer and pants are almost ready and cannot wait. I understand sharing this isn’t helpful since they are both sold out. Some other options include this Buck Mason Hutton Blazer and matching trousers (I am always impressed by the quality to price point ratio of Buck Mason—I would buy this if I didn’t have the Chava). This Nili Lotan or this with the gold buttons (these are wool) with these sailor trousers that are stone colored. The jacket of summer if you want to splurge is this from The Row, it’s going to fly out (sold out everywhere else). It’s funny because I have long wanted a Chinese style top after seeing Ashley in below eons ago.
I can’t justify another expensive blazer, but I do love this Dosa Chinese blouse from a great little boutique in Santa Fe where I bought a few things last fall (Liberty print boxers and bras the owner has made….so good for summer). The top with my Chava linen trousers and sandals and several of my new Summer Souvenirs jewelry designs.
Then other tops: A blue button down (I promise my button-down post is next—I have a few to share) or why not a blue tank under your blazer or on it’s own? I know this pale chambray Suzie Kondi top is going to get a lot of play in NYC and on my trip to Greece. And to go back to the browns…this sheer plaid Matteau top. So good.
Accessories: The standouts for me will be pieces from my Summer Souvenirs collection including the new good luck Fortuna Pendant and some vintage coral necklaces (they won’t last long).
Then, I am all about a straw bag in the summer that doesn’t cost $2k. I am into the shape of Heidi Wynne’s Juliette because it’s just big enough to carry my everyday essentials and the Chestnut color carries back to my browns (it also comes in natural). The Inès Bressand is perfect for the beach or lugging more than is typical. A vintage Hermès Garden Party tote is always on my list and the Tibi X LL Bean Boat n Tote is great for summer schlepping.
Summer dressing should be easy and somewhat formulaic IMO. Of course white jeans and denim shorts, pastel tees, safari shirts and black accents always round out the wardrobe. Everything noted here is an update. I also have thoughts about evening summer dressing (coming down the pipeline). And as for shoes, I am still working on that. Stay tuned!
