I am inflight on my way to CA as I write this for my upcoming jewelry trunk shows at Goop (Brentwood tomorrow and Saturday, Marin September 27th + 28th) so stop by if you’re around.
Instead of a thematic post, I’m continuing with random ideas that I’ve been thinking about this week.
A Brown Suede Jacket
First, why not consider a brown suede jacket this season in lieu of the ubiquitous field jacket versions? Honestly, this is when IG and nonstop coverage kind of zaps the joy out of wanting something and for me, it is a field jacket. I bought the Barbour, which I need and is an OG and not really a field jacket, but I would like something else that is not waxed and lightweight. Enter the brown suede jacket. I feel like it’s a thing this season too (but when is fall not about a brown suede jacket?) The one I would love, is this Khaite Lana version (also here and here), but it’s not in the cards for me right now. It is perfect though—the color, the timeless design, those buttons.
A much more reasonable option is this Madewell by Alexa Chung version which I think is what Elly McGaw is wearing below. I still haven’t bought the brown corduroy Nili blazer, do I need both? Not sure. I am partial to the darker brown.
Also that image of Elly is by the photographer Asia Typek, who is my fave street style photog to follow during fashion week. Unlike the craziness other photogs capture during fashion season (which I appreciate on some level, but do not relate to), Asia’s feed is full of women (and men) that I would gladly swap wardrobes with. Her latest, of my favorite model, Vivienne Roehner is so fun (and almost makes me want to wear color). Maybe I will have to order a colorful striped shirt when my friend Michelle Boor of Micky Paris comes to town next month (stay tuned). A purple striped shirt under my grey The Row blazer? Maybe.
Styling Tweaks
I find lately, I am looking for styling inspiration; my wardrobe is fairly robust, but I want new ways to consider wearing things. Here are a couple I noticed of late, and I am going to keep my eyes open for more, since I think this can be key to learning to live with less. Once you have your core wardrobe down, the quickest way to alleviate boredom is to make small tweaks to what you’re wearing. And like these, it’s not necessarily about adding a new accessory, but just rethinking how to wear something.
Double Up Your Tees
The easiest idea is to double up on your tees or tanks, similar to Barbara Martelo, above. If you put a black tee or tank over a white/ivory one, it’s an easy detail that feels a bit different. I think slightly sheer pieces make it slightly sexy. I imagine Barbara is wearing The Row tees, but I would do this with my favorite Johnny tees from Frances de Lourdes. Both the black and the creme are sheer, making them a perfect, lightweight combo.
Tie It Under One Arm
The newsletter Magasin (which I love) mentioned the designer Connor McKnight (new to me) so I went on his IG and found this photo. I saw a young woman at Goop last weekend who had tied her sweatshirt over her workout gear the same way. I can’t decide if it looks contrived, or if it’s just slightly different so it works. I have to play around with some sweaters and see. But maybe?
Goop Buys
Goop dropped their first G. Label Fall collection the same day I was in the NYC boutique and there are two items I’m seriously considering. First, this grey tank, which because it is a modal blend, is ridiculously soft. It’s a perfect under sweater layering piece and this cashmere boyfriend sweater which has a sexy deep v and is a good taupe color. Basically, you always have me at taupe, I find it to be an uber chic shade.
To Visit
Toteme just opened their UES outpost in NYC and when I get back, I am going to visit, because I need to see this staircase in person. Wow. But also….
Because I want to try on their dark, raw denim jeans. I love my new Jamie Haller jeans I wrote about in my last post (and big thank you to Jane Herman for including my choice in her Substacker jean roundup), but for evenings and business days, I am “feeling” a white button-down and dark, stiff denim jeans with a blazer or sweater thrown over it. I don’t own black or dark denim jeans. Crazy, right?! I am going to try different styles/designers and will of course report back.
See you in LA?

I enjoy the random thought pieces. Some random thoughts to add. When I saw the model with the pink sweater and blouse I laughed with joy. Back in the early 2000’s I wore a similar combination on constant repeat. I may start repeating it again. Random thought #2 several years ago I bought some dark flare leg jeans. They come in so handy when I don’t want to wear jeans but I don’t want to wear dress pants either.
I love the Nili Lotan corduroy blazer. 🤎
As for taupe, would appreciate any recommendations of pieces you’ve found and like as I seek to add more of it to my wardrobe. Camel and beige and other tans are everywhere (and don’t look great with my coloration) but taupe is more elusive!
