My Transitional Color Palette
Branching out a bit with Morandi on my mind + meet me in Palm Beach
First, thank you to those who stopped by GOOP last week, it is always such a treat to meet readers. Next week, I am at Kirna Zabete in Palm Beach for 3 days, so if you are there come say hello.
Next week also marks the official start of Spring but any seasoned New Yorker knows how up and down the weather is for another month. (Have you seen the Fake Spring cartoons?) Layers are essential, I always like to wear a bit of cashmere until it’s too hot, and I am also in the mood to shake up my color palette. My red cashmere sweaters never fail to make me happy, so why not try other hues?
With all of that in mind, I feel like it is shaping up to be a Morandi color-inspired Spring. I love the muted yet rich color palette of a Morandi painting, and having seen two shows of his in the last few months, it felt like his influence had creeped in here and there in the color choices of Spring clothes.
I like the idea of pairing yellows and grays together, perhaps with a hint of blue. The Guest in Residence cardigan that I am wearing below is a major color shock for me, but toned down with my grey The Row blazer, I’m into it. Plus when it warms up (and I get more accustomed to the shade) it will work with khakis and whites. (The pants are a older color version of these Gap barrel pants.) I am trying to wear my grey pearls as often and as casually as I can.
Miuccia Prada in her grey pearls (and a very Morandi color combo) from Vogue, March 2024. She had the same pearls on when she took a bow at her show last week.
LSD’s coat is a bit darker, but it still fits the vibe.
And Alaïa for Fall 2025, deeper shades, same mood.
Then into the paler dustier shades….
I saw the Seafoam Leset cable sweater on Gucci Westman and immediately knew that was a color I would be comfortable wearing. Again, pairing it back to my grey Maria McManus pants from last Spring and pearls. It looks great with jeans as well. A dusty pink could be pretty if that is your thing, but it’s not easy to get me in pink, as in, you won’t.
Georgia O’Keeffe dresses from Living Modern exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum in 2017.
Cy Twombly’s living room (I would take that pink couch.)
Of course, as you will see in my next post, the majority of my Spring wardrobe rotates around a super basic color palette. But everything can’t always be black and white. Well, it can be for the most part, but on occasion it’s fun to veer off course. It’s amazing how two sweaters can change it all up.
Happy almost Spring!
