My Thoughts on Fewer, Better in WSJ
Because it's time to re-evaluate and clean out your closet.
First, Happy 2025! It’s been crickets from my end since I left for vacation on Dec. 21st, and frankly staying off all forms of social media was the digital cleanse I apparently didn’t know I needed. So if I didn’t comment on a milestone you shared or respond to a DM, apologies. I’m starting to catch up.
In the meantime, a heartfelt THANK YOU to writer Alison Cohn who interviewed me for the latest WSJ Off Duty article about capsule wardrobe dressing. You can read it here, and I’ve put the screen shots below in case you don’t have a subscription.
If you follow me, you know I am about fewer, better things. I believe in being deliberate and thoughtful about everything you bring into your life, not only because it is good for the planet, but because living an edited life is how those who have the kind of style many of us admire (CBK, Jackie O, Lauren Hutton, Phoebe Philo) approach dressing.
And it’s true, after the pandemic, I purged almost 300 pieces from my closet (I was an editor for over 20 years and held onto a lot) and in that process created a guide, The Wardrobe Project, that helps me stay on track. Even as I try to practice what I preach, clothes have a way of sneaking in and piling up. Before I left for my vacation, I went through my seasonal bins I keep in the basement and realized I still had onto several pieces that no longer worked which I took to Goodwill. Unless you stop buying clothes, it’s a continual process.
What I don’t believe in is beating yourself up about it. It can feel like an overwhelming process, but I promise once you do a major edit, the maintenance gets easier. If you are going to start, commit to finishing. It feels really good at the end.
In the meantime, I was going to post about my New Year’s resolutions—I obviously like to be intentional, though not stringent, about things. Maybe I will get another post in shortly.

Great article! I was reading it thinking - oh, I’ll have to follow her on Substack. Meanwhile - have been a fan of your Ig for years! Thanks for all the style inspo
I love that more people are adopting the fewer/better mindset. As a clothing brand, we only focus on made to measure and custom so we keep the waste to a minimum. Thank you for spreading the message-we need to change how we consume.
